The treatment of people with HIV infection is rapidly and constantly progressing as new research findings become available. With more than 25 approved antiretrovirals (ARVs) and 6 ARV classes, health care providers caring for HIV-positive patients have increasingly complex choices regarding ARV therapy for the management of treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients. While these choices provide health care providers and patients with important new options, they also lead to new challenges. For the health care provider treating HIV infection, it is very difficult to keep up with the rapidly increasing amount of new information that becomes available through journal articles, conference presentations, CME programs, and other sources. The availability and understanding of this constant stream of new research data and information are essential for providing the best possible ARV therapies and therapeutic strategies that are most likely to lead to successful and durable treatment in ARV-naïve and ARV-experienced patients.
As in 2011, this series will consist of 2-hour quarterly debate programs throughout the year in the following US locations: New York, NY; Miami, FL; Chicago, IL; Houston, TX; San Francisco, CA and Los Angeles, CA. Each meeting will feature a case-based debate format that will include important new data that have been presented or published throughout 2012. Program registrants/participants will have a chance to request topics live and via email, which will be considered for future scheduled debates in their city, along with the current topics already included in the program.
This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment and management of patients with HIV infection.
This activity is supported by an unrestricted educational grant by Gilead Sciences.
Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:
Initiate current ARV drug therapy for treatment-naïve patients with HIV based on guideline recommendations and current clinical research;
Incorporate appropriate therapeutic strategies in the management of treatment-experienced patients with HIV;
Use information regarding drug adverse events, drug pharmacokinetics and patient adherence to achieve ARV success and avoid morbidity and mortality;
Describe preventive care for the important opportunistic infections and co-morbidities that may increase the risk for morbidity and mortality in HIV positive patients;
Describe the importance of individualizing the care of each HIV-positive patient in clinical practice.
